Jiu Jitsu Technique – Half Guard

Jiu Jitsu Technique – Half Guard

There are various techniques used in Jiu Jitsu and ‘half guard’ is just one of them. In order to learn the various Jiu Jitsu techniques, you must be properly motivated, determined, and more importantly, you must be diligent because this sport requires intense training. It doesn’t really matter if you’re physically fit or not because as you progress in the training, you will surely become physically fit. Jiu Jitsu is not just about learning the proper techniques in order to control an opponent but it’s also about maintaining a healthy and physically fit body, as well as achieving your other goals in life.

Half Guard is considered as transition position in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Before, the position was called half mount and it was a very good position. If you can place your opponent’s leg between your own legs, you have achieved the guard position. Why is ‘half guard’ considered a transition position? Well, it’s really very easy to understand. You see, once you perform this BJJ technique, you can already conduct various sweeps. Aside from that, this technique will also allow you to control the legs of your opponent.

Half Guard is not only a transition position but it also one of the advanced BJJ positions. Once you’ve properly executed this technique, your opponent will surely find it hard to shift or move to other BJJ positions. If you want to get back to the guard position (full-closed), this is the technique that you should master. You can easily do the leg lock once you’re able to put your opponent in the half guard. Take over the right leg of your opponent and then place your left foot at the back of your opponent’s knee. Make sure that your right leg take over the right leg of your opponent and then place your foot on your opponent’s ankle.

Although the instruction may seem very easy, it gets complicated when you apply it. If you want to see how it is done, you need to attend a Jiu Jitsu class because the instructor will show the move to the students carefully. If you have a private instructor in Jiu Jitsu, you can learn the move in no time because the instructor is focused on you alone. If you make mistakes in performing the move, the instructor will tell you instantly. But you see, learning Jiu Jitsu in a training class or gym is more fun because you get to test the moves with different players. Constant practice will help you to achieve progress.

Half guard may be a transition movement but it is vital. If you can’t learn this technique, you won’t be able to execute various sweep techniques. You must be able to master the half guard so that you can perform other moves properly. Pay attention to the instructor as he or she teaches the move. You must stay focused at all times and keep your eyes open. That is a very effective way of learning the move. Listen to the instructors give by your teacher and learn from other players.

Jiu Jitsu moves are a bit complicated especially for beginners but if you’re determined to learn, these things will not hinder you. By simply keeping yourself focused during BJJ trainings, you can go a long way. Learn half guard now  and sweep your opponent to the floor.
